The principal mountainous regions where fjords have formed are in the higher middle latitudes and the high latitudes reaching to 80°N. Hence, coasts having the most pronounced fjords include the west coast of Europe, the west coast of North America from Puget Sound to Alaska, the west coast of New Zealand, and the west coast of South America and to south-western Tasmania.

Fjords were formed during the glacial period, when glaciers cut a U-shaped valley by abrasion of the surrounding bedrock. Glacial melting was accompanied by rebound of Earth's crust as the ice load and eroded sediment was removed (also called isostasy or glacial rebound). In some cases this rebound was faster than sea level rise.
Most fjords are deeper than the adjacent sea; Sognefjord, reaches as much as 1,300 m below sea level.
Gudvangen-Flåm is a great trip that takes you through the unique and scenic fjord scenery of the Nærøyfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord - Norway, one of the longest in the world, now also on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
Great fjord scenery, salty air, breathtaking sunsets, the thrill of
exploring the world on a boat: this is what makes this tour different
and well worth trying!
